Stronger teeth, fewer cavities

Every parent wants to protect their child from cavities, and fluoride is one of the simplest ways to do it. At Brave Kids Dental Co., our fluoride treatment for kids in Sandy, UT is quick, gentle and comfortable for most children, and we always respect your family's choices, including a fluoride-free option.

What is a fluoride treatment?

A fluoride treatment is a thin layer of concentrated fluoride painted onto your child's teeth, usually right after a cleaning. Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens enamel and helps teeth resist the acids that cause cavities.

Is fluoride safe for my child?

Yes. Fluoride is a safe and effective way to strengthen your child's enamel and protect their teeth from cavities. We use the right amount for your child's age, and we're always happy to answer your questions about it.

A fluoride-free option

For our fluoride-free families, we're happy to offer hydroxyapatite as a natural alternative. Hydroxyapatite is a mineral that's naturally part of tooth enamel, and it helps support and strengthen teeth. We'll talk through both options so you can choose what feels right for your family.

Who benefits from fluoride?

  • Kids who are more prone to cavities
  • Children with deep grooves or weak spots in their enamel
  • Kids who snack often or love juice
  • Children whose teeth are hard to brush well, including kids with braces or special needs
  • Any child whose teeth could use extra strength as they grow

What to expect

  1. A clean start. Fluoride usually follows your child's cleaning, so the teeth are ready.
  2. A quick paint-on. We brush a thin layer onto the teeth. It takes just a minute or two, and kids can watch the ceiling TV.
  3. Simple aftercare. We'll let you know if there's anything to avoid eating or drinking right after.

That's it. No needles, no drills and no discomfort for most kids.

How often should kids get fluoride?

Most kids get a fluoride treatment at their regular 6-month visits. Children who are more prone to cavities may benefit from extra support, and Dr. Vy will recommend what fits your child at their exam.

Fluoride works best as a team

  • Sealants protect the deep grooves on back teeth where cavities often start. Learn about dental sealants.
  • Brushing and flossing at home remove the plaque fluoride can't.
  • Smart snacking keeps sugar to mealtimes, giving teeth time to recover.

If a small cavity has already formed, silver diamine fluoride may help stop it from growing.

A tip for parents

At home, use a smear of fluoride toothpaste the size of a grain of rice for children under 3, and a pea-sized amount from age 3, unless your family has chosen a fluoride-free routine. Ask us which toothpaste fits your child best at your next visit.

Meet Dr. Vy

Dr. Vy Tran has spent over 20 years combined in medicine and dentistry. She started as a respiratory therapist at 19, caring for children in the ER, NICU, PICU and surgery, then earned her DMD and a master's in Oral Biology at the University of Toledo, trained at the University of Utah and specialized in pediatric dentistry.

She also completed a fellowship at the Rose F. Kennedy Center in the Bronx, NY, with additional training in caring for children with special needs. She'll explain why she recommends fluoride or hydroxyapatite for your child, so you can make an informed choice.

She's a mom herself, so she knows the worry from the parent's side of the chair, and she built Brave Kids around one goal: making the dentist the easiest part of your kid's day.
