Clean teeth, happy visits

A professional cleaning is one of the easiest ways to protect your child's smile, and at Brave Kids it can actually be fun. Our kids' teeth cleanings in Sandy, UT are gentle, explained every step of the way and done at your child's pace, so they leave with a fresh smile and a good feeling about the dentist.

What is a kids' dental cleaning?

A dental cleaning gently removes plaque and buildup that brushing at home can miss, then polishes the teeth so they're smooth and bright. For kids, it's also a chance to check how brushing is going and to practice healthy habits together.

Why cleanings matter for kids

  • They help prevent cavities. Removing plaque and buildup keeps bacteria from damaging growing teeth.
  • They keep gums healthy. Clean teeth mean happier gums, even in little mouths.
  • They build good habits. Every visit is a chance to learn brushing and flossing in a fun, hands-on way.
  • They make the dentist familiar. Regular, positive visits help kids feel at home here.

What to expect, step by step

  1. Meet the tools. We introduce each tool in a simple, hands-on way, so your child can see and touch before we begin.
  2. A gentle clean. We carefully remove plaque and buildup, while your child relaxes with a show on the ceiling TV.
  3. A polish. We smooth and brighten the teeth so they feel smooth and bright.
  4. Extra protection. We usually finish with a fluoride treatment, or hydroxyapatite for fluoride-free families.
  5. Brushing tips. We share easy, age-appropriate tips for home with you and your child.

Comfort at every step

Some kids love the tickly polish, and some find dental sounds and sensations a lot. That's why our rooms have ceiling TVs, noise-reducing headphones and weighted lap pads, and why we always go at your child's pace. Our Montessori-inspired approach means we explain what's coming and offer choices, so your child feels in control.

For kids who need more support, our sensory-friendly dentistry and desensitization visits can help build comfort over time.

How often should kids get a cleaning?

Every 6 months for most children, together with a dental exam. Kids who are more prone to cavities may benefit from coming in more often, and we'll recommend what fits your child.

Fluoride or fluoride-free

Fluoride is a safe and effective way to strengthen enamel and protect against cavities. For fluoride-free families, we're happy to offer hydroxyapatite as a natural alternative. We'll talk through both, so you can choose what feels right.

Keeping teeth clean at home

  • Brush twice a day for two minutes, with a soft brush sized for your child
  • Floss once teeth start to touch
  • Keep sugary snacks and drinks to mealtimes
  • Help younger kids brush until they can do it well on their own

A tip for parents

Make brushing a game: play a favorite two-minute song, take turns "checking" each other's teeth, or let your child brush a stuffed animal's teeth first. Little rituals like these make home care, and cleanings, feel easy. For extra protection on back teeth, ask us about sealants.

Meet Dr. Vy

Dr. Vy Tran has spent over 20 years combined in medicine and dentistry. She started as a respiratory therapist at 19, caring for children in the ER, NICU, PICU and surgery, then earned her DMD and a master's in Oral Biology at the University of Toledo, trained at the University of Utah and specialized in pediatric dentistry.

She also completed a fellowship at the Rose F. Kennedy Center in the Bronx, NY, with additional training in caring for children with special needs. She checks in with every child during their visit and makes sure they leave proud of how brave they were.

She's a mom herself, so she knows the worry from the parent's side of the chair, and she built Brave Kids around one goal: making the dentist the easiest part of your kid's day.
