Designed to soothe, not overwhelm

Bright lights, buzzing sounds and unfamiliar textures can make the dentist feel overwhelming, especially for kids who are anxious or sensitive to their senses. At Brave Kids Dental Co., we built a sensory-friendly dental office in Sandy, UT from the ground up, so children can feel calm, safe and in control.

What is sensory-friendly dentistry?

Sensory-friendly dentistry is dental care designed to minimize sensory triggers and help regulate a child's nervous system. It shapes everything at Brave Kids, from the lighting and colors in our rooms to the way we introduce tools and talk with kids.

Who it helps

  • Kids with dental anxiety or fear
  • Children who are sensitive to lights, sounds, smells or touch
  • Children with autism, sensory processing differences or other special needs
  • Kids who had a hard experience at the dentist before
  • Any child who simply does better in a calm space

Our sensory-friendly office

Every inch was designed with one question in mind: how does this feel to a kid walking in for the first time?

  • A gentle wave ceiling with soft lighting instead of harsh overheads
  • Calm blues and warm wood, with rounded seating and no sharp corners
  • Sea turtles on the floor that welcome kids and guide them to the front desk
  • A cozy nook for kids who need a quieter moment

Comfort tools in every room

  • TVs on the ceiling to give eyes something fun to focus on
  • Noise-reducing headphones to soften dental sounds
  • Weighted lap pads for a calming, grounded feeling
  • Thin, flexible X-ray plates that are much more comfortable for small mouths than bulky sensors

Montessori-inspired care

Our approach is Montessori-inspired. We introduce tools in simple, hands-on ways, explain what to expect and offer choices, so kids build confidence at their own pace. For children with special needs, we adapt that approach to their communication, sensory preferences and abilities, with patience and support.

What to expect

  1. We get to know your child. We ask about triggers, what calms them and how they communicate best.
  2. We go slowly. Your child explores, touches tools and tries comfort items before anything begins.
  3. We check in often. Breaks and choices are always on the table.
  4. We celebrate every step. Progress looks different for every child, and every step counts.

When a little more help is needed

For kids who need more time, desensitization visits build familiarity before treatment. For kids who need more support during treatment, laughing gas and other sedation options can help.

A tip for parents

Share anything that helps your child: sounds or smells to avoid, favorite shows, calming routines, or the words that work at home. You can also bring your child's own headphones or a familiar item. You know your child best, and we'll follow your lead.

Meet Dr. Vy

Dr. Vy Tran has spent over 20 years combined in medicine and dentistry. She started as a respiratory therapist at 19, caring for children in the ER, NICU, PICU and surgery, then earned her DMD and a master's in Oral Biology at the University of Toledo, trained at the University of Utah and specialized in pediatric dentistry.

She also completed a fellowship at the Rose F. Kennedy Center in the Bronx, NY, with additional training in caring for children with special needs. She designed Brave Kids so that children who find the dentist overwhelming have a place where they can truly relax.

She's a mom herself, so she knows the worry from the parent's side of the chair, and she built Brave Kids around one goal: making the dentist the easiest part of your kid's day.
