Our preventive care is about more than just "checking." It's about building confident, happy dental experiences that help your child grow up with a healthy smile for life.

What is a kids' dental exam?

A dental exam is a careful check of your child's teeth, gums, bite and mouth. For children, it also means keeping track of how their teeth and jaws are growing, so we can spot changes early and guide you as your child develops.

What we check

  • Early signs of cavities and weak spots in the enamel
  • Gum health and how well brushing is going
  • How baby teeth and adult teeth are coming in
  • Your child's bite and jaw growth
  • Habits that affect teeth, like thumb-sucking or grinding
  • Any existing fillings, crowns or sealants

What to expect

  1. A relaxed start. We say hello, catch up with you and let your child settle in, maybe with a show on the ceiling TV.
  2. A gentle exam. Dr. Vy introduces each tool in a simple, hands-on way and explains what she's looking at in kid-friendly words.
  3. X-rays if needed. We only take X-rays when they help us see something an exam can't.
  4. Clear answers. We share what we found in plain words, with full transparency, and make any plan together with you.

Comfortable, safe X-rays

We follow the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry's age-appropriate recommendations, so your child only has X-rays when they're truly helpful. We also invested in a phosphor plate X-ray system. Its plates are thin and flexible, which makes them much more comfortable for little mouths than bulky, hard sensors.

How often should kids have an exam?

Every 6 months is recommended for most children. Kids who are more prone to cavities may benefit from more frequent visits, which give their teeth the extra support they need. Most exams are paired with a dental cleaning, so you can take care of both in one visit.

Learning good habits together

Every checkup includes oral hygiene education for kids and parents. We'll show your child easy brushing and flossing habits, talk about snacks and drinks, and share tips that actually work in real family life. We may also recommend fluoride or hydroxyapatite and dental sealants for extra protection.

If we find a cavity

Cavities happen, even with great brushing, and it's never a reason for judgment. If Dr. Vy finds one, she'll explain your options clearly, from silver diamine fluoride for small cavities to tooth-colored fillings, and you'll decide together.

Why regular exams matter

  • Small problems stay small. Early cavities are easier to treat, and some can be stopped before they grow.
  • Kids get comfortable. Regular, positive visits make the dentist feel familiar instead of scary.
  • You stay in the loop. You'll always know how your child's teeth are doing and what to watch for.

A tip for parents

Book checkups for times when your child is usually rested and fed, and keep the talk about the visit light and positive. Bring any questions you've been saving up. We love hearing them.

Meet Dr. Vy

Dr. Vy Tran has spent over 20 years combined in medicine and dentistry. She started as a respiratory therapist at 19, caring for children in the ER, NICU, PICU and surgery, then earned her DMD and a master's in Oral Biology at the University of Toledo, trained at the University of Utah and specialized in pediatric dentistry.

She also completed a fellowship at the Rose F. Kennedy Center in the Bronx, NY, with additional training in caring for children with special needs. At every exam, she takes time to explain what she sees, so both you and your child understand how their teeth are doing.

She's a mom herself, so she knows the worry from the parent's side of the chair, and she built Brave Kids around one goal: making the dentist the easiest part of your kid's day.

How often does my child need a dental exam?

Every 6 months for most kids. Children who are more prone to cavities may benefit from more frequent visits for extra support. Exams are usually paired with a dental cleaning.

Yes. We only take X-rays when they help us see something an exam can't, following the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry's age-appropriate recommendations. Your child's safety always comes first.

Why do you check my child's bite and growth?
