Cavities happen, and that's okay

Hearing that your child has a cavity can feel like a lot, but please know it happens to so many families, even with great brushing. At Brave Kids Dental Co., we're here to work with you and your child to fix those ouchies gently. Our kids' fillings in Sandy, UT use minimally invasive techniques, child-friendly words and a sensory-friendly approach, so your child feels safe the whole time.

What is a filling?

A filling repairs a tooth that's been damaged by a cavity. We gently remove the decayed part of the tooth and fill the space with a strong, tooth-colored material, so the tooth can do its job again and the cavity can't grow.

Does a baby tooth really need a filling?

Often, yes. Baby teeth help kids chew, speak and smile, and they hold space for the adult teeth coming in. An untreated cavity can grow, cause pain or lead to infection. Dr. Vy will always explain your child's options and only recommend what's truly needed.

Tooth-colored fillings, with sparkles

We use tooth-colored composite fillings that blend in naturally with your child's smile. And here's the fun part: kids can choose a filling with added sparkles. It's a small choice that helps them feel in control and proud of being brave.

Signs your child may have a cavity

  • Tooth pain or sensitivity to hot, cold or sweets
  • White, brown or dark spots on a tooth
  • A visible hole or rough area
  • Avoiding chewing on one side

Many cavities have no symptoms at all, which is why regular exams matter.

What to expect, step by step

  1. We explain everything first. Dr. Vy shows your child the tools in simple, hands-on ways and explains each step in kid-friendly words.
  2. Comfort comes first. We numb the area so your child stays comfortable. Laughing gas is available for kids who need a little extra help relaxing.
  3. A gentle repair. We clean out the cavity and place the filling, while your child watches a show on the ceiling TV.
  4. A proud finish. We check the bite and celebrate your child's bravery.

Comfort tools that help

Our sensory-friendly rooms have TVs on the ceiling, noise-reducing headphones to soften dental sounds and weighted lap pads for a calm, grounded feeling. We go at your child's pace, offer breaks and never rush. For children who need more support, we can talk about sedation options.

Other options we may discuss

  • Silver diamine fluoride can stop small cavities without drilling, especially for kids who need more time.
  • Crowns may protect a tooth better when a cavity is large.
  • A pulpotomy may be needed if a cavity has reached the nerve.

After a filling

If your child was numbed, wait until the numbness wears off before eating, so they don't bite their cheek or tongue. Mild sensitivity can happen and usually fades quickly. Call us anytime with questions.

A tip for parents

Before the visit, keep the words simple and positive: "Dr. Vy is going to clean the sugar bug out of your tooth." Let your child know they get to pick sparkles, and bring a comfort item for their lap.

Meet Dr. Vy

Dr. Vy Tran has spent over 20 years combined in medicine and dentistry. She started as a respiratory therapist at 19, caring for children in the ER, NICU, PICU and surgery, then earned her DMD and a master's in Oral Biology at the University of Toledo, trained at the University of Utah and specialized in pediatric dentistry.

She also completed a fellowship at the Rose F. Kennedy Center in the Bronx, NY, with additional training in caring for children with special needs. She'll walk you and your child through every step of a filling and celebrate every brave moment along the way.

She's a mom herself, so she knows the worry from the parent's side of the chair, and she built Brave Kids around one goal: making the dentist the easiest part of your kid's day.

Frequently Asked Question

Does a cavity in a baby tooth really need a filling?

Often, yes. Baby teeth help kids chew, speak and hold space for adult teeth, and an untreated cavity can grow, cause pain or spread infection. Dr. Vy will explain your child's options and only recommend what's needed.

What kind of fillings do you use?

We use tooth-colored composite fillings that blend in with your child's smile. They're bonded to the tooth and look natural.

Can my child really choose sparkles in their filling?

Yes! Kids can choose a tooth-colored filling with added sparkles. It's a small choice that helps them feel in control and proud of being brave.

Will my child feel the filling?

We numb the area first so your child stays comfortable, and we explain each step in kid-friendly words before we do it. For extra comfort, we have ceiling TVs, noise-reducing headphones and weighted lap pads, and laughing gas is available for kids who need a little more help relaxing.

How long does a filling take?

Most fillings are quick. Dr. Vy will give you a time estimate beforehand, and we always go at your child's pace.

What should my child do after a filling?

If your child was numbed, wait until the numbness wears off before eating so they don't bite their cheek or tongue. Mild sensitivity can happen and usually fades quickly. Call us if anything worries you.

Are there options other than a filling?

Sometimes. For very small cavities, or for children who need more time, silver diamine fluoride can help stop decay. For larger cavities, a crown may protect the tooth better. We'll walk you through every option.
