Protect their smile while they play

Active kids are happy kids, and we love seeing them run, jump and compete. But falls, collisions and flying balls can chip or knock out a tooth in a second. At Brave Kids Dental Co., we help families in Sandy, UT protect their kids' smiles with sports mouthguards that fit comfortably, so kids actually keep them in.

What is a sports mouthguard?

A sports mouthguard is a soft, protective cover worn over the teeth during sports and active play. It cushions impacts and helps protect teeth, lips, cheeks and tongue from injury.

Which kids need one?

If your child plays a sport with contact, falls or fast-moving balls, a mouthguard is one of the simplest ways to protect their smile. That includes:

  • Soccer, basketball and football
  • Hockey and lacrosse
  • Baseball and softball
  • Martial arts and wrestling
  • Skateboarding, biking and gymnastics

Why fit matters

A mouthguard only protects well if it fits well. One that's too bulky or loose is uncomfortable, makes it hard to talk or breathe, and usually ends up in a pocket instead of a mouth. We'll make sure your child's mouthguard fits their mouth and their growing teeth, so it's comfortable enough to wear every time.

What to expect

  1. A quick look. Dr. Vy checks your child's teeth, bite and any braces or appliances.
  2. A good fit. We help your child get a mouthguard that fits comfortably and stays in place.
  3. A comfort check. Your child tries it out, and we make sure they can talk, breathe and drink easily.
  4. Care tips. We show you and your child how to clean and store it.

Mouthguards and braces

Kids with braces need protection even more, since a hit to the mouth can damage both teeth and brackets and hurt the lips. Let us know about any orthodontic treatment, and we'll help with the right fit.

Growing mouths, changing fit

Kids' mouths change quickly as baby teeth fall out and adult teeth come in. Bring your child's mouthguard to their regular checkups, and we'll make sure it still fits. Most kids will need a new one as they grow.

Caring for a mouthguard

  • Rinse it before and after each use
  • Brush it gently and let it dry
  • Store it in a ventilated case
  • Keep it out of hot cars and away from pets
  • Replace it when it's worn, torn or loose

If a tooth gets hurt

Accidents can still happen. If your child chips or knocks out a tooth, stay calm, keep any pieces and call us right away at (385) 614-6123. Learn more about our emergency dentistry.

A tip for parents

Make the mouthguard part of the gear bag, right next to the water bottle and shin guards, so it's never forgotten. Letting kids pick a fun case can help them remember it too.

Meet Dr. Vy

She also completed a fellowship at the Rose F. Kennedy Center in the Bronx, NY, with additional training in caring for children with special needs. She'll check how your child's teeth are growing and make sure their mouthguard keeps up.

Does my child need a mouthguard for sports?

If your child plays a sport with falls, contact or flying balls, a mouthguard is one of the easiest ways to protect their smile. Think soccer, basketball, football, hockey, martial arts, skateboarding and more.

What's the benefit of getting a mouthguard from the dentist?

A mouthguard only protects well if it fits well. We'll make sure your child's mouthguard fits their mouth comfortably, so they actually keep it in during play.

At what age should my child start wearing a mouthguard?

As soon as they start playing contact or high-risk sports. Kids' mouths grow quickly, so we'll check the fit at regular visits.

Can my child wear a mouthguard with braces?

Yes, and it's especially important to protect braces and lips. Let us know about any orthodontic treatment so we can help with the right fit.

How do we clean and care for a mouthguard?

Rinse it after each use, brush it gently, let it dry, and store it in a ventilated case. Keep it out of hot cars and away from pets.

How often should a mouthguard be replaced?

Replace it when it's worn, damaged or no longer fits, which happens often as kids grow. Bring it to your child's checkups and we'll take a look.

What should we do if a tooth gets hurt during a game?
