We're here when it hurts

A toothache or a fall can turn any day upside down, and we know how hard it is to see your child in pain. At Brave Kids Dental Co., we're an emergency dentist for kids in Sandy, UT, here for both new and existing patients. Call us at (385) 614-6123 and we'll help you figure out what to do next.

What counts as a dental emergency?

  • A knocked-out tooth
  • A chipped, cracked or broken tooth
  • A bad toothache that won't go away
  • Swelling in the face, cheek or gums
  • A tooth pushed out of place after a fall
  • A cut or injury to the lips, tongue or cheeks
  • A lost or broken crown or space maintainer

If you're unsure whether it's an emergency, call us. We'd rather hear from you.

Same-day visits

We offer same-day emergency visits when we can, and when your child is comfortable and cooperative enough for us to help safely. Call us as early as possible so we can find a time. We see emergencies for both new and existing patients.

What to do right away

  • Knocked-out tooth: Stay calm and call us. Hold the tooth by the top, not the root, and bring it with you. Don't try to put a baby tooth back in.
  • Chipped or broken tooth: Rinse your child's mouth with warm water, save any pieces and use a cold compress for swelling.
  • Toothache: Rinse with warm water and gently floss to remove trapped food. A cold compress on the cheek can help.
  • Cut lip or tongue: Press gently with clean gauze or a cloth, and use a cold compress.

When to go to the ER

Go to the emergency room right away for a head injury, trouble breathing or swallowing, heavy bleeding that won't stop, or swelling that's spreading quickly.

What to expect at an emergency visit

  1. A calm welcome. We know emergencies are stressful. We'll slow things down and help your child feel safe.
  2. A gentle look. Dr. Vy checks the injury or painful tooth, and takes X-rays if needed.
  3. Relief first. Our first goal is to ease pain and protect the tooth.
  4. A clear plan. We explain what we found and the next steps, which may include a filling, crown, pulpotomy or extraction.

When your child is too upset

Pain and fear can make it hard for kids to sit for treatment, and that's never their fault. Our sensory-friendly tools, ceiling TVs, headphones and weighted lap pads help many kids settle. For children who need more support, we'll talk about laughing gas or other sedation options.

Preventing dental injuries

Many sports injuries can be prevented with a well-fitting sports mouthguard. Regular checkups also help catch cavities before they turn into painful emergencies.

A tip for parents

Save our number, (385) 614-6123, in your phone today. In a stressful moment, your calm voice helps your child stay calm too, and we'll guide you through the rest.

Meet Dr. Vy

Dr. Vy Tran has spent over 20 years combined in medicine and dentistry. She started as a respiratory therapist at 19, caring for children in the ER, NICU, PICU and surgery, then earned her DMD and a master's in Oral Biology at the University of Toledo, trained at the University of Utah and specialized in pediatric dentistry.

She also completed a fellowship at the Rose F. Kennedy Center in the Bronx, NY, with additional training in caring for children with special needs. Her years as a respiratory therapist in the ER taught her how to bring calm to stressful moments for kids and parents.

She's a mom herself, so she knows the worry from the parent's side of the chair, and she built Brave Kids around one goal: making the dentist the easiest part of your kid's day.
