Only when it's truly needed

Hearing that your child needs a tooth removed is never easy, and we understand. At Brave Kids Dental Co., extraction is always our last resort. When a tooth can't be saved, our tooth extractions for kids in Sandy, UT are done gently, with age-appropriate explanations, sensory-friendly support and a plan for what comes next.

When does a tooth need to come out?

When a tooth is severely sick or damaged and we're unable to save it, removing it can relieve discomfort and protect the other teeth. Common reasons include:

  • A cavity too large to repair with a filling or crown
  • An infection that puts nearby teeth at risk
  • A tooth badly broken in an accident
  • A baby tooth that isn't falling out and is blocking the adult tooth

Dr. Vy will always explain the risks and benefits first, and look at whether options like a pulpotomy could save the tooth.

How we keep your child comfortable

  • Clear, kid-friendly explanations. We tell your child what's happening in simple words they understand, without scary talk.
  • Numbing first. We numb the area so your child stays comfortable.
  • Sensory-friendly support. Ceiling TVs, noise-reducing headphones and weighted lap pads help kids feel calm and grounded.
  • Sedation when needed. Dr. Vy and the team will discuss your child's needs and sedation options, if necessary.

What to expect, step by step

  1. We talk it through. Dr. Vy explains why the tooth needs to come out and answers all your questions.
  2. We make a comfort plan. Together we decide on numbing, laughing gas or deeper sedation.
  3. A gentle removal. We carefully remove the tooth, going at your child's pace.
  4. Aftercare and next steps. We give you clear instructions and, when appropriate, a space management plan.

Planning for the space

When a baby tooth comes out early, nearby teeth can drift into the gap and crowd the adult tooth. When it's appropriate, we'll make a space management plan, which may include a space maintainer to hold the space open.

After an extraction

  • Have your child rest for the rest of the day
  • Offer soft, cool foods like yogurt, applesauce and smoothies (no straws)
  • Wait until numbness wears off before eating
  • Keep fingers and tongues away from the spot
  • Gentle pressure with clean gauze helps with a little bleeding

If bleeding doesn't stop or pain gets worse, call us right away at (385) 614-6123.

Meet Dr. Vy

Dr. Vy Tran has spent over 20 years combined in medicine and dentistry. She started as a respiratory therapist at 19, caring for children in the ER, NICU, PICU and surgery, then earned her DMD and a master's in Oral Biology at the University of Toledo, trained at the University of Utah and specialized in pediatric dentistry.

She also completed a fellowship at the Rose F. Kennedy Center in the Bronx, NY, with additional training in caring for children with special needs. She explains every extraction in age-appropriate words and makes sure your child feels supported from start to finish.

She's a mom herself, so she knows the worry from the parent's side of the chair, and she built Brave Kids around one goal: making the dentist the easiest part of your kid's day.

Frequently Asked Question

When does a child's tooth need to be pulled?

When a tooth is too sick or damaged to save, removing it can relieve discomfort and protect the other teeth. Extraction is always our last resort, and Dr. Vy will explain all the risks and benefits first.

How do you keep my child calm during an extraction?

We use age-appropriate explanations, sensory-friendly support and numbing to keep your child comfortable. Dr. Vy and the team will discuss your child's needs and sedation options if necessary.

Will my child need a space maintainer?

Sometimes. If a baby tooth comes out early, a space maintainer can hold the space so the adult tooth can come in properly. We'll make a space plan when it's appropriate.

What should my child eat after an extraction?

Soft, cool foods like yogurt, smoothies (no straw) and mashed foods are best for the first day. Wait until any numbness wears off before eating.

How do I care for my child after an extraction?

Have your child rest, avoid drinking through a straw, and keep them from poking the area with their tongue or fingers. We'll give you clear aftercare instructions to take home.
