A first visit that feels good

Your child's first dental visit is a big moment, and it's normal to wonder how they'll react. Maybe you're worried they'll cry, or maybe your own dentist visits weren't great. At Brave Kids Dental Co. in Sandy, UT, we make that first visit simple, gentle and encouraging, so your child walks out feeling proud and you walk out feeling relieved.

When should the first visit be?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first dental visit by your child's first birthday, or within 6 months of their first tooth appearing. If your child is older and hasn't been to the dentist yet, that's completely okay. We'll start right where they are, without any judgment.

Why the first visit matters

  • It builds trust. A positive first experience helps your child feel comfortable at the dentist for years to come.
  • It gives you answers. We'll talk through brushing, teething, snacks, bottles and habits, so you know exactly what to do at home.
  • It catches concerns early. We can spot small problems before they grow, and make a plan together if anything needs attention.
  • It starts your dental home. The same friendly faces and calm space, visit after visit, help your child feel like they belong.

What to expect, step by step

  1. A warm welcome. Sea turtles on the floor guide your child from the front door to the front desk, and there's no rush to do anything but look around.
  2. Getting comfortable. We let your child explore at their own pace. Little ones usually sit right on a parent's lap.
  3. A gentle look. Dr. Vy introduces each tool in a simple, hands-on way, explains what she's doing in kid-friendly words, and checks your child's teeth, gums and mouth.
  4. A cleaning if your child is ready. For older kids who feel comfortable, we may do a gentle cleaning. If not, that's fine too.
  5. Your questions and a simple plan. We share what we saw, answer every question and plan your child's next steps together.

How we keep it calm

Our office was designed around how a child feels walking in for the first time. Soft lighting replaces harsh overheads, the ceiling curves like a gentle wave, and there's a cozy nook for kids who need a quieter moment. In our treatment rooms, ceiling TVs, noise-reducing headphones and weighted lap pads help kids relax.

Our Montessori-inspired approach means we explain what to expect, offer choices and let your child build confidence one small step at a time. No scary talk, no rushing and no forcing, ever.

What if my child cries?

That's completely normal, and it's okay. We'll slow down, try again in a different way, or simply let your child get to know us this time. Every small step counts, and building trust is part of the visit, not a failure.

Children with special needs

We tailor every first visit to the child. For children with special needs or sensory sensitivities, we start with a calm conversation about triggers and what helps, and we may suggest desensitization visits so your child can get familiar with us first. No diagnosis is required. Learn more about our special needs dentistry.

How to prepare your child

  • Keep it positive and casual. Mention the visit cheerfully a few days before: "We're going to meet Dr. Vy, and she's going to count your teeth!"
  • Choose gentle words. Skip words like "shot," "hurt" or "drill," and avoid promising "it won't hurt."
  • Play dentist at home. Take turns counting teeth with a toothbrush and a favorite stuffed animal.
  • Pick a good time. Book when your child is usually rested and fed, often the morning or after a nap.
  • Bring a comfort item. A favorite toy or blanket can come along for the whole visit.

Meet Dr. Vy

Dr. Vy Tran has spent over 20 years combined in medicine and dentistry. She started as a respiratory therapist at 19, caring for children in the ER, NICU, PICU and surgery, then earned her DMD and a master's in Oral Biology at the University of Toledo, trained at the University of Utah and specialized in pediatric dentistry.

She also completed a fellowship at the Rose F. Kennedy Center in the Bronx, NY, with additional training in caring for children with special needs. Her first visits are all about trust: she takes her time, explains everything in kid-friendly words and lets your child set the pace.

She's a mom herself, so she knows the worry from the parent's side of the chair, and she built Brave Kids around one goal: making the dentist the easiest part of your kid's day.
