When kids need the most support

For some children, even the calmest room and the gentlest team aren't enough to make dental care possible while awake. That's nothing to feel bad about, for you or for your child. At Brave Kids Dental Co., we offer general anesthesia for kids in Sandy, UT, so children can get all the care they need safely, comfortably and in a single visit.

What is general anesthesia?

General anesthesia means your child is fully asleep during dental treatment. They won't feel, see or remember the procedure. This allows us to complete all needed dental care in one visit, which reduces stress and encourages a more positive association with oral health.

Who might need it?

  • Children with severe dental anxiety
  • Very young children who need a lot of treatment
  • Kids with complex treatment needs
  • Children with special needs or sensory sensitivities who can't safely complete care while awake

In our office or at a surgery center

Many children can be treated under general anesthesia right here in our office. When treatment takes place in our own space, your child stays in a familiar, comforting environment, with less disruption to their routine and no hospital visit.

For children with severe anxiety, very young age or complex needs that can't be completed safely in our office, care at our affiliated surgery center may be the right path. We'll explain why, and guide you through every step.

Who provides anesthesia?

General anesthesia is provided by our trusted team of certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs). Their primary role is to keep your child safely asleep and closely monitored, while Dr. Vy focuses on the dental care. We work closely together for a safe, smooth and supportive experience.

What to expect, step by step

  1. Consultation. We review your child's dental needs, medical history and comfort level, and talk through your questions and concerns.
  2. A personalized plan. We decide together where treatment will happen and what care will be completed.
  3. Preparation. We give you clear instructions, including when your child needs to stop eating and drinking.
  4. Treatment day. Your child is carefully put to sleep and monitored with advanced equipment that tracks vital signs throughout.
  5. Waking up. Your child wakes with our team close by, and we go over aftercare with you before you head home.

Is general anesthesia safe for children?

General anesthesia is safe when provided by trained professionals with close monitoring. Your child's safety is always our top priority, and we'll only recommend it when it's truly the right way for your child to get the care they need.

After treatment

Most children feel drowsy for the rest of the day, so plan for a quiet afternoon at home. Offer soft foods and fluids as directed, keep your child close, and call us at (385) 614-6123 with any questions.

Exploring all the options

General anesthesia is one of several options. Some children do well with laughing gas, IV sedation or our sensory-friendly approach, and some benefit from desensitization visits over time. Learn more about all our sedation options.

A tip for parents

Follow the eating and drinking instructions exactly, since they keep anesthesia safe. Dress your child in comfy clothes, bring a favorite blanket or stuffed animal, and plan a cozy movie afternoon at home afterward.

Meet Dr. Vy

Dr. Vy Tran has spent over 20 years combined in medicine and dentistry. She started as a respiratory therapist at 19, caring for children in the ER, NICU, PICU and surgery, then earned her DMD and a master's in Oral Biology at the University of Toledo, trained at the University of Utah and specialized in pediatric dentistry.

She also completed a fellowship at the Rose F. Kennedy Center in the Bronx, NY, with additional training in caring for children with special needs. Her hospital background in the ER, NICU, PICU and surgery gives her a deep respect for safe, carefully monitored anesthesia.

She's a mom herself, so she knows the worry from the parent's side of the chair, and she built Brave Kids around one goal: making the dentist the easiest part of your kid's day.
